Why “C’s Get Degrees” Might Be the Secret to Real Strength & Success in Life
I have spent the majority of my life immersed in academics, earning my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Kinesiology, and a Doctorate in Chinese Energetic Medicine (Qigong). I chased straight A's relentlessly, believing that perfection was the only path to success—until grad school. On the very first day of grad school my professors told us, “you need a 3.0 GPA to graduate.” I distinctly remember thinking to myself, “3.1, here I come.” That moment marked the beginning of me relaxing my standards and embracing the idea of doing my best without the pressure of perfection… (and, mission accomplished…graduated with a 3.1! Ha!)
“C's get degrees.”
At first glance, that phrase can sound like a justification for laziness or settling. But when we look deeper, there's a quiet wisdom hiding inside it—one that can create far more long-term success than relentlessly striving for straight A's.
Because life doesn't actually reward perfection.
It rewards consistency, resilience, and adaptability.
The Hidden Cost of Chasing Straight A's
Striving for straight A's often teaches us:
To tie our worth to performance
To push past healthy limits
To fear mistakes and “failure”
To burn out quietly while appearing successful
Many high achievers learn how to force results… but not how to sustain themselves. Over time, that approach can create:
Chronic stress
Injuries (physical or emotional)
All-or-nothing thinking
Quitting when perfection isn't possible
What “C's Get Degrees” Really Teaches
A “C” represents:
Showing up even when conditions aren't perfect
Doing enough consistently
Learning through repetition, not pressure
Progress without self-punishment
It's not about lowering standards.
It's about choosing sustainability over self-destruction.
And this lesson applies powerfully to fitness.
Fitness Isn't a Test You Pass or Fail
In fitness, straight-A thinking sounds like:
“If I can't do the full workout, why bother?”
“I missed a week, so I've failed.”
“I should be stronger by now.”
“I'll start again when I have more time/energy/motivation.”
But the body doesn't respond to intensity alone.
It responds to consistency over time.
A “C-level” workout might look like:
10 minutes instead of 60
A few kettlebell swings and push-ups instead of a full program
Gentle yet powerful Qigong or Tai Chi instead of high-intensity training
Moving your body even when you're tired, stressed, or overwhelmed
And here's the truth most people miss:
Those “C” efforts compound.
Deep Wisdom Lives in Repetition, Not Perfection
In traditional practices—martial arts, Qigong, strength training—mastery comes from:
Repeating simple movements
Listening to the body
Allowing progress to unfold
Honoring rest as part of growth
The strongest, healthiest people aren't the ones who go hardest.
They're the ones who keep going.
They build trust with their bodies.
They recover faster.
They adapt instead of breaking.
For You (and Your Kids)
When we model sustainable effort—especially as parents—we teach our kids:
Progress matters more than perfection
Mistakes are part of learning
Self-respect outlasts pressure
Strength is built slowly and honestly
“C's get degrees” isn't about doing less.
It's about doing what you can, consistently, with integrity.
And over time, that creates not just results—but wisdom, resilience, and real strength.
If you're ready to build strength that lasts—not just looks good on paper—start where you are, with what you have, and keep showing up.
That's how real success is built.
